Venezuela participates in regional review of Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration

The Director of the Office for Consular Relations of Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry, Eulalia Tabares, participated on Wednesday in the regional review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, an event organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

Tabares highlighted that the Latin American and Caribbean countries are working to review what progress has been made to achieve the goals after the endorsement of the Global Compact in Morocco, and in the creation of implementation mechanisms and improvement of this instrument.

“In this case, we’re working on Area 4 , which addresses one of the most important themes: Facilitating regular migration and decent work, and enhancing the positive development effects of human mobility,” said Tabares, who added that to Venezuela, “it is fundamental as a State to reaffirm the positive effect of migration to contribute to the development of countries.”

Tabares also highlighted that the impact caused by unilateral coercive measures in Venezuela has promoted “a particular migration movement,” which has provided the region with valuable professionals in different areas and contributed, amid the pandemic, to strengthening services in different receiving countries.

Likewise, the director of the Office for Consular Services said Venezuela has adhered to the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

“Domestic treatment is also part of Venezuela’s fundamental perspective on migration within the framework of human rights (…) to respect and ensure human rights of migrants,” she stressed.

This regional review is the first phase to follow up the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, an agreement adopted in 2018 as the main cooperation framework in the multilateral scenario to address international migrations.
