Venezuela registers 302 new COVID-19 cases

Venezuela registered 302 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours for a total of 5,832 patients, reported Vice-president Delcy Rodríguez during a meeting of Presidential Commission for the Prevention and Control of Coronavirus (COVID-19) at the Miraflores Presidential Palace.

The Venezuelan vice-president explained that 175 out of these new cases are due to community transmission and are located in Zulia (99), Capital District (25), Táchira (15), Sucre (11), Mérida (7), Miranda (6), Lara (5), Bolívar (5), La Guaira (1) and Aragua (1) states.

The other 127 are imported cases from Colombia (79), Brazil (27) and Chile (1); out of these 127 cases, 20 are due to contact with international travelers.

The number of deaths rose to 51 after 3 new deaths were reported. “A 77-year-old woman from Lara State, a 53-year-old man from Trujillo State and an 84-year-old man from Yaracuy State,” explained Rodríguez.

Regarding the COVID-19 hotspots in Zulia state, Rodríguez said that the Venezuelan government is assessing strategies to contain and eradicate the transmission chain.

“We have strengthened the number of doctors and medicines. We have to do more tests because we have to win this battle against COVID-19 for Zulia,” said President Nicolás Maduro during a televised telephone conversation he held with the Commission.

The Venezuelan president urged governors and mayors of those regions still in quarantine to strengthen the compliance with preventive protocols to contain the propagations of this virus in their states.

Likewise, he called on them to work with the People’s Power. “Only the People’s Power can deploy plans to detect and address new coronavirus cases, and only the active, aware People’s Power can break the transmission chains with medical and scientific support,” he stressed.

The Venezuelan president highlighted that there are 14,000 medical brigades deployed throughout the country to attend firsthand to these COVID-19 patients.

Regarding COVID-19 early detection rapid tests, Venezuelan has done 1,258,937 tests, representing 41,965 tests per 1 million population.
